Where to star on this 80's classic?
Well, first of all, it's not as good as you may remember from your childhood!
Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy seeing it again after some 20 years. But I just did not feel the same enjoyment I did as a child. Yes it's a kids movie, but the whole thing just comes across as being quite dated. In fact, sadly, seriously dated.
The joys of Blu Ray Hi-Def unfortunately do no justice for the visual effects. Matte lines are way too obvious!! What this film really needed was a good digital restoration. This could have even been given an ET style update, a bit of CGI on a few of the animatronic characters would probably have purists in an uproar, but get new generations to actually enjoy the film rather than spend 90 minutes laughing at the fact that the Luck Dragon just looks way too fake when he talks.
Something else that bugged me was the extreme lack of any special features. Not even a good retrospective doco interviewing the now grown up cast!
Final rating: 4/10
This rating is only for the fact that I enjoyed the nostalgic, novelty factor.
